Work with dignity for domestic workers

The dependence of urban middle-class households on domestic workers has grown.Their work of sweeping, cleaning and cooking entails numerous health hazards, compounded by poor and irregular food and little rest and recreation. Aged domestic help are routinely turned away to fend for themselves, with no question of any pension.

The visibility of professionally run helplines should be widely known and as being sensitive to the needs of caller.  With reference to rising tide of sexual violence in India, Delhi, along with other states, launched dedicated helpline services, in which technical aspects are focused and empathetic communication skills lack.

A proactive app to prevent violence against women

Circle of 6 is a project of Tech 4 Good, Inc. which is a start-up non-profit dedicated to prevent violence through the use of mobile technology. Hotlines are now pre-programmed for the recently formed 24/7 women’s hotline of New Delhi and the Jagori advocacy helpline. This app also directs you to the Lawyer’s Collective if calling the police feels unsafe, which for many women it does.

Over 10% stranger rape cases in Delhi, according to NCRB report

While data for Delhi have been stable over the previous years, large swings between years for a few other cities raise some doubts over the accuracy of NCRB data. Victims of rape also tend to be younger in cities than in the rest of the India, more so in Delhi. The corresponding all-India figure was just 36.5%. In Delhi, 329 of the 585 victimes, or about 56.2% were aged 18 or less.
