Delhi is very angry, and in no mood for festivities. The brutal rape of a 23-year-old girl in a moving public bus on Outer Ring Road on Sunday night has left the city shocked, disgusted and demanding extreme action immediately. People are seething on social media, shouting for capital punishment or castration of the law breakers, signing petitions to fast-track the case, getting out on the streets and giving an ultimatum to the government. This, after all the slutwalks, girlcotts and night marches failed in the recent past.

Delhi’s youth has only one thing to say — “There’s been enough of lip service. We won’t tolerate this anymore — the authorities must act or face our wrath.” On Tuesday, over a thousand poured out at a protest organised by Jawaharlal Nehru University Students Union and NGO Jagori at Munirka Mor, where the victim and her friend boarded the bus. Slogans were raised on the inefficiency of authorities and the government was challenged in a unanimous voice. “This incident has put a slap on our society. We have become insensitive to such issues. It’s sad that the incident happened right next to the police station,” said Shruti Mukherjee of JNU, who was part of the protest march. “Delhi Government and Delhi Police are so inefficient … they should be ashamed. Rather than moral preaching, why don’t they do their job well?” said Hem Misra, another participant.
