Public transport still unsafe for women commuters

Despite attempts by the state government to create a robust public transport system in the city, the safety of women commuters, especially after dark, remains a concern. The problem arises due to inadequate last-mile connectivity, say experts.

In fact, autorickshaws and Grameen Sewas are the only mode of transport available for women travelling in the evening hours. The German woman who was allegedly raped in central Delhi seems to have faced a similar problem.

According to a study, one in two women have faced sexual harassment while using three-wheelers after dark.

Most of the recommenda tions that came in the aftermath of the Nirbhaya case are slowly being implemented. According to senior police officers, a foolproof driver verification process or a GPS monitoring system is yet to be implemented by transport authorities in Delhi and the rest of NCR.

The cops allege that revoking their powers to prosecute TSRs for permit violations and misbehaviour has aggra vated the problem further.

Though most of the autorickshaws plying in the city have a GPS-guided meters, there is no mechanism to monitor their movements unless there is an emergency. Police say that the 15,000-odd TSRs entering the city from the rest of NCR do not comply with the basic safety measures.

The errant drivers also take the advantage of the lack of adequate TSR haltand-go points and choose to park vehicles in areas that often remain out of police’s purview. Traffic police had challaned about 20,000 TSRs in 2015 for improper parking.

“We can do little apart from challaning vehicles for parking or jumping a red light. Verification of drivers and their antecedents have to be done by the licence issuing authorities,” said a police officer.

The study conducted by the women’s right’s group Jagori says that women feel mostly in border areas.
